Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Oh, cover, why do you have to be so
gorgeous??! <33
Synopsis:

Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still. When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Review:

I have been meaning to read a book written by Cassandra Clare for ages, and I absolutely adore the sound of this one. And, I am happy to announce: I loved it!

Set in Victorian England, Tessa lands herself there when she receives a letter from her "brother" telling her that she has to stay with the Dark Sisters. She finds out a very surreal fact about herself: she has the ability to shapeshift into someone and read their thoughts and feel their emotions. Nobody has seen anybody like her before, and so the dangerous magic begins.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I much prefer first person to third person - however, I didn't once ever feel distant from the story. From experience, I have much enjoyed books more when they are in first person. You can become the character and feel their emotions more and be drawn into the story. However, this is one of few books where I have loved it in third person. I still felt connected to the characters, and felt sympathy for their problems and formed opinions for each one. From the first sentence, I was engrossed in this new, unique and exciting world.

Speaking of characters - man, there are some good ones in this book! Tessa is a strong, kick-butt heroine who also is kind and good-hearted. The Dark Sisters made my skin crawl with hate, and the scene with her brother?! Oh wow, I haven't changed my opinion so quickly and so often of a character in my life. And, of course, a love triangle! :D I love Will and Jem - but I am Team Will! ;) Jem is so kind and loyal, but Will is mysterious and has a lot of secrets and I think that Tessa will discover something about him that will make them closer.

I am desperate to get the next book, but the third book doesn't come out until 2013 - there better not be a cliffhanger on Clockwork Prince...

I LOVE Clocwork Angel too! I agree - Tessa is an awesome protagonist, and, while Jem is really sweet, I am definitely Team Will too!

Glad you've finally gotten to read a Cassandra Clare book! I don't think there was a major cliffhanger at the end of Clocwork Prince, but it definitely leaves you wanting Clocwork Princess! :)

I have this to read and I don't know why I haven't! Cassandra Clare has such a wonderful writing style, I love it.<3 And I want to discover Will and Jem! Not to mention Tessa, of course.(:

I prefer first person, too, but I also love when a book in third person can make you love it as much as one written in first person.<3

Lovely review, Zoe!

I usually (but not always) prefer a first person narrative too, but I agree that the third person was handled really well in this book, as they are in all of CC's books. I'm so glad you enjoyed this, Zoe! It's a favourite of mine. :) Brilliant review!

EEEEEEEEEE! CLOCKWORK ANGEL! I just loved this book so much, and I definitely loved Clockwork Prince too ;) I think I love The Infernal Devices series more than The Mortal Instruments. The love triangle in The Infernal Devices is just AMAZING, intense and beautiful. I loved everything about it and I'm pretty sure I am Team Will by the end of the book ;) Cassie's writing is really amazing and like you said, the third person narrative was handled really well!

Awesome review, Zoe! ♥ Can't wait for you to read Clockwork Prince! :)
